Build a little library that glows at night. Lantern Library has two tall bookcase walls lined with shelves of books, arched windows high up, a gallery with a balustrade across the back, two lanterns hanging beneath it and a library ladder leaning against the shelves - a cosy reading room made for a book lover's shelf. The book rows are cut as one piece per shelf, so you can paint every spine a different colour. This is a printable PDF plan: you cut the parts yourself from one kind of sheet material, so there is nothing to wait for in the post. It shares its outside size with our other book nook plans, so they line up on the shelf as a little street.

Digital download - no physical items are shipped. Your download link arrives by email straight after checkout.

What's in the PDF

  • Parts map: an exploded view with every part lettered
  • Cut list in millimetres and inches
  • Thickness table: matching sizes for 5.2, 5.5, 6 and 6.5 mm sheets, because "6 mm" and "1/4 in" ply are rarely exactly that
  • Cutting layouts with waste figures for 600 x 300 mm craft sheets and a 2 x 4 ft project panel
  • Materials, hardware and tools list
  • Eight illustrated assembly steps with measured positions for every detail
  • Full-size templates for the bookcase walls (one template, cut two), the ladder, the lanterns, the balustrade and the book rows
  • Safety notes

Not Included (Transparency)

  • No wood, lights or tools - this is the plan only
  • Product images are 3D renders of the design
  • You will need: about two 600 x 300 mm sheets of 6 mm ply, PVA glue, a warm-white LED string with battery box, paint in several colours for the book spines, a saw for straight cuts and one for windows, books and the ladder, and a drill with 3, 6, 7 and 10 mm bits

Pro Tips for a Smooth Build

  1. Measure your sheet first: pick the matching column in the thickness table before you cut.
  2. Paint the spines first: all six book rows are the same shape - paint them flat before gluing.
  3. Use a spacer block: cut a block to each shelf height so the left and right shelves line up.
  4. Glue the lanterns before the gallery: they are much easier to place while the gallery is still loose.

Every size in this plan is read from the same 3D model, which is checked automatically for collisions, glue contact and finished size before the PDF is made. New to scratch building? Read our guide How to Make a Book Nook From Scratch.
